The Article 5 NATO Medal is awarded to U.S. military and civilian personnel who participated in NATO's operation in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and the airspace, as well as the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Article 5 NATO Ribbon is worn below the United Nations Ribbon and above the Multinational Force & Observers Ribbon.
If a servicemember is awarded subsequent NATO ribbons (NATO, NATO-Kosovo, ISAF, Non Article 5), they are permitted to wear the first award they received, and the appropriate number of bronze stars attached.
