Members of the United States Army received the American Defense Service medal for any length of service during September 8, 1939 and December 7, 1941; the time between President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Declaration of National Emergency and the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Service members must have been on active duty for 12 months or longer.
